Position Summary
The Center for Survivors is a Confidential Program at Michigan State University. The Michigan State University Center for Survivors Volunteer Coordinator will provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to interpersonal violence survivors. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruitment, supervision, training, and retention of Survivor Advocacy Crisis Intervention volunteers; manages 24-hour crisis hotline and the crisis chat; provides direct service to clients by providing in- person crisis intervention, safety planning, referrals, advocacy services and follow-up contact. The Volunteer Coordinator has ethical, professional, and legal responsibilities to maintain records regarding work with clients and to protect client confidentiality in accordance with guidelines set by VOCA/VAWA, MSU, the State of Michigan, and other professional associations.
Job Responsibilities
· Responsible for recruitment, supervision, training, and retention of the Survivor Advocacy Crisis Intervention Volunteers (SACI).
· Collaborates with Care Coordinator and CFS staff to plan and facilitates training for new SACI volunteers three times per year.
· Provides occasional court advocacy, law enforcement advocacy, institutional advocacy in compliance with Title IX, personal advocacy, and academic advocacy to survivors of interpersonal violence using empathy and empowerment.
· Provides support to volunteers signed up for Crisis Chat and Hotline shifts.
· Provides support to backup staff.
· Assists survivors with completing Michigan Crime Victims Compensation applications.
· Coordinates referrals to services in the community when necessary.
· Participate in a shared case management system that supports collaboration and consultation.
· Provides crisis intervention, resources, and referrals to walk-in clients during regular office hours.
· Completes other miscellaneous VOCA Grant, University, and program documentation as needed.
· Maintains collaborative relationships with campus and community partners.
· Completes other duties as specified and assigned.
· Maintains client confidentiality.
· Maintains a database of referral resources and community services in surrounding communities.
· Maintains the Volunteer Database of background checks, training compliance, registry clearance, volunteer anniversaries.
· Coordinates Outreach Requests for SACI volunteers.
· Facilitates weekly SACI meetings.
· Holds SACI Office Hours and provides Individual Supervision to volunteers.
· Coordinates Volunteer Recognition event planning.
Please note: This is an off-dated position funded for 12 months from date of hire, with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in social work or related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience providing advocacy, crisis intervention, and supportive services to survivors of relationship violence, stalking and/ or sexual assault, and experience facilitating training and presentations for large groups; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
A. Master’s Degree in Social Work preferred.
B. Demonstrated competency and expertise in training volunteers and serving clients from diverse populations.
C. More than two years of experience providing crisis intervention, advocacy and/or counseling to survivors of interpersonal violence.
D. Experience facilitating training and presentations for large groups.
E. Experience developing training and facilitating meetings.
F. At least 2 years supervisory experience.
G. Experience with data collection and reporting.
H. Understanding of interpersonal violence victimization and natural responses to trauma.
I. Awareness and experience using an intersectional lens with a focus on multiculturalism, diversity, equity and inclusion.
J. Demonstrated empathy and supportive communication skills.
K. Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills.
L. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work responsibilities.
M. Ability to be honest and maintain professional boundaries.
N. Ability to work collaboratively with other clinicians and victim service providers.
