Position Summary:
The Vice President, Audit and Risk Officer is responsible for overseeing the audit services and enterprise risk management functions within the company. Oversees development and execution of the internal audit plan and evaluates the effectiveness of the organization’s internal controls. Plans, organizes, and directs audit activities, including the development of long range and dynamic audit plans, in coordination with external auditors and the SOX project management office. Develops, implements, and maintains comprehensive programs for assessing the key risks across the enterprise. Partners with business areas on strategies to mitigate overall company risk. The role involves regular interaction with the Xcel Energy Board of Directors.
Essential Responsibilities:
Audit Services:
Act as the principle internal audit leader, accountable for the overall management and strategic leadership for Xcel Energy’s internal audit function. Establish and maintain Audit department standards and policies, consistent with corporate policy, to guide the technical and administrative performance of audit activities. Ensure compliance with those policies.
Conduct quarterly risk and fraud assessments based on input from management, external auditors, and external factors for the development of a dynamic audit plan. Develop Audit goals, objectives, and key performance indicators (KPI) to execute the dynamic audit plan. Monitor progress against the audit plan and KPIs.
Coordinate SOX Internal Audit testing to evaluate the design and operating effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting. Collaborate across business and IT to identify risks and drive process improvement. Maintain ongoing communication with external auditors on SOX planning, walkthroughs and testing, audit requests, and any deficiency evaluation.
Communicate audit findings/recommendations to promote constructive change; collaborate with management to establish and validate timely, appropriate remediation plans, and monitor those plans.
Interface regularly with the Xcel Energy Board of Directors Audit Committee.
Enterprise Risk Management:
Develop and implement a comprehensive enterprise risk management strategy that aligns with the organization's objectives.
Identify, assess, and prioritize potential risks to the organization, including, but not limited to, financial, operational, strategic, and compliance risks. Monitor emerging risks and trends in the industry that could impact the organization.
Develop and implement forward-looking risk mitigation strategies in partnership with the business areas to minimize the impact of identified risks on the organization. Embed risk management processes into the company’s operations.
Advise senior leadership on risk exposure and provide insights for informed decision-making.
Partner closely with senior executives and business area leaders to ensure risk management strategies are integrated into the organization's overall business strategy.
Monitor risk management activities. Report on the effectiveness of risk management strategies to senior management and the Xcel Energy Board of Directors.
Present enterprise risk assessments to the Xcel Energy Board of Directors on an annual basis.
Leadership and Team Management:
Lead, mentor, and develop the audit and risk management team.
Foster a culture of integrity, accountability, and financial transparency.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. Relevant advanced degree preferred.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or other relevant certification highly desired.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in audit, risk management, compliance, or related fields, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
In-depth knowledge of auditing standards, regulatory compliance requirements, financial modeling, and risk assessment/management frameworks is essential.
Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and industry standards for electric utility and natural gas delivery companies.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and presentation skills.
Must operate with and foster a culture of objective, sound judgement, integrity, and transparency.
Ability to influence and work effectively across all levels of the organization.
Strong leadership with proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams.
Experience working with Boards of Directors and Audit Committees is desirable.

Non-Bargaining
The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $225,000.00 to $355,000.00 per year
