Role Overview: What You’ll Be Doing
In this role, the Vice President (VP), Corporate Safety, Security, and Compliance is responsible for leading and overseeing the development, implementation, and management of all safety, security, and compliance programs across within the airline industry. This executive role will ensure the airline’s operations are aligned with aviation safety standards, regulatory requirements, and internal policies while protecting passengers, employees, and assets. The VP will work to create and maintain a safety culture that meets and exceeds regulatory requirements for both domestic and international operations.
ResponsibilitiesYour Key Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
Safety Oversight and leadership
Direct and manage the airline's safety management system (SMS) in accordance with national and international aviation safety regulations (e.g., FAA, EASA, ICAO).Develop, implement, and monitor the company’s safety policies and procedures to ensure the highest level of operational safety for both flight and ground operations.Lead safety risk management efforts, identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing corrective actions to mitigate safety issues.Monitor and report safety performance metrics to senior leadership, making recommendations for improvements where necessary.Lead investigations into safety incidents and accidents, ensuring compliance with regulatory reporting requirements and identifying preventive actions to avoid recurrence.
Security Leadership
Oversee the airline’s corporate security policies and protocols, ensuring the protection of passengers, employees, and company assets from external and internal threats.Work closely with government agencies (e.g., TSA, Customs, local law enforcement) to maintain effective and compliant security practices.Manage physical security measures, including airport screening, baggage handling, access control, and surveillance systems.Ensure compliance with all applicable transportation security regulations and standards, including cyber and data security for sensitive airline systems and passenger information.Regulatory Compliance and Oversight
Ensure full compliance with local, state, and international aviation laws and regulations, including Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements, European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) guidelines, and ICAO standards.Manage the airline’s response to audits and inspections from regulatory bodies and ensure any identified non-conformance issues are addressed promptly.Lead the company’s internal compliance program, ensuring that all operational departments follow the industry’s best practices, safety standards, and regulatory obligations.Stay informed on changes to aviation regulations and industry standards, adjusting company policies and programs to ensure continued compliance.
Risk Management
Develop and implement comprehensive risk management strategies to identify, assess, and mitigate operational and regulatory risks across all airline operations.Conduct regular safety and security audits to identify potential vulnerabilities and areas of improvement.Collaborate with key stakeholders in the airline to integrate safety and security measures into daily operations and long-term strategic planning.
Training and Awareness
Oversee the development and delivery of training programs for employees on safety, security, and compliance topics to foster a culture of awareness and accountability.Ensure that airline personnel are properly trained on the latest regulatory requirements, safety protocols, and security measures.Promote continuous education regarding emerging safety technologies, best practices, and industry trends.
Cross-functional Collaboration
Work closely with operations, flight crew, ground crew, legal, HR, and IT departments to ensure a unified approach to safety, security, and compliance.Act as a liaison with regulatory agencies, industry associations, and external partners to influence policy and stay ahead of industry developments.Collaborate with senior leadership to align safety and compliance objectives with overall business goals and operational strategies.
Leadership and Team Development
Lead, mentor, and manage the safety, security, and compliance teams, setting clear objectives, expectations, and KPIs.Provide guidance and support to direct reports, ensuring they have the resources and training to be successful in their roles.Oversee budgeting and resource allocation for safety, security, and compliance initiatives.Reporting and Analytics:
Prepare and present regular reports to senior leadership regarding safety, security, and compliance performance.Analyze data and trends to forecast potential risks and opportunities for improvement. QualificationsWhat You Bring to the Table: Education & Certification Requirements
We’re looking for someone who has a unique mix of experience, skills, and passion for what we do:
Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management, Occupational Safety, Risk Management, Business Administration, or related field.Minimum 10 years of experience in aviation safety, security, compliance, or risk management roles, with at least 5 years in a leadership position.The Extras We Value (Preferred Requirements)

Master's degree in a related field or relevant professional certifications (e.g., Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Aviation Safety Professional (CASP), or similar).Deep understanding of the regulatory landscape for the airline industry, including FAA, EASA, ICAO, TSA, and related authorities.Proven experience in managing airline safety management systems, crisis response plans, and security operations.Track record of developing and implementing successful safety, security, and compliance programs.Expertise in risk assessment, safety protocols, and security systems in the aviation industry.Strong leadership and decision-making capabilities, with the ability to manage cross-functional teams.Excellent communication skills to effectively report to senior management, regulatory bodies, and external stakeholders.Analytical skills to interpret safety and security data, identify trends, and implement corrective actions.Knowledge of aviation safety software, reporting tools, and incident management systems.

What We Offer: Salary Range & Benefits
At Wheels Up, we believe in fair compensation based on experience, skills, and qualifications. The salary for this role ranges from $187,000 to $250,000, depending on a variety of factors. We don’t typically start individuals at the top of the salary range; your place within the range is based on what you bring to the table. Additionally, you may be eligible for a discretionary annual incentive program, which rewards individual and organizational performance.
