**Job Summary**
The VP, Tech Market Strategy & Partnerships leads the monetization and technology transfer efforts for Battelle, managing the external value creation of a diverse portfolio of intellectual property (IP) in various stages of development. The leader in this role executes the effective evaluation, protection, marketing, and out-licensing of Battelle’s intellectual property portfolio while ensuring maximum exposure, licensing revenue, and impact. This role collaborates extensively with the Battelle Tech Council, research leaders, and IP department, as well as with the Government Business Development and Commercial Sales teams.
**Responsibilities**
+ Manages the external value creation of a diverse portfolio of intellectual property (IP) assets in various stages of development, generated by research and development activities in health and life sciences, national security, and energy and environmental solutions. Identifies select intellectual property assets, that are ideally positioned for strategic internal development targeting a downstream value build and works to ensure advancement of these opportunities. Promotes an environment of professional and effective commercialization and technology transfer across the Battelle organization.
+ Facilitates strategic partnerships focusing on key industry players that have focus areas that synergize with Battelle’s intellectual property portfolios. Provides an entrepreneurial approach to Battelle’s commercialization efforts by generating and advancing strategic partnerships with industry, non-profits, and academia.
+ Serves as a member of the Applied Science and Technology senior leadership team and holds a seat on Battelle’s Tech Council. Provides guidance to technical leads on market gaps that Battelle is well-positioned to develop technology for. Conducts educational programs to provide an advanced level of knowledge relating to intellectual property and technology commercialization, including additional methods for evaluating viability of technology and research ideas.
+ Evaluates new technology disclosures/inventions to determine strength of intellectual property and commercial viability, in collaboration with the Tech Council and IP department. Executes effective evaluation, protection, marketing, and out-licensing of Battelle’s intellectual property portfolio in collaboration with Battelle’s Legal team; and ensures maximum exposure, licensing revenue, and impact for all intellectual property.
+ Leverages influence and provides indirect leadership to employees regarding efforts to monetize and transfer technology and intellectual property assets. Serves as a coach to team members in Government Business Development and Commercial Sales.
+ Establishes Battelle as a highly visible producer of technologies that are investable by the venture capital community as well as other sources of commercial funding. Collaborates with the leaders of Government Business Development and Commercial Sales to engage external technology development resources, and the EVP of AS&T to engage with the financial community for resources and support of specific commercialization efforts.
+ Creates and develops Battelle’s internal capabilities regarding monetization and transfer of technology with a 5-year strategy that includes budgets, performance metrics, policy formulation, regulatory compliance and external engagement strategies.
+ Negotiates high-stakes business deals on behalf of AS&T – including licensing deals, applying appropriate deal structure to diverse licensing opportunities, and representing Battelle’s interests in negotiations around spin-offs.
+ Collaborates with the national laboratory community to seek opportunities to jointly commercialize IP in the support of the labs’ sponsors.
**Key Qualifications**
+ Bachelor’s degree in science, technology, or business.
+ 10+ years of experience with the following across a diverse set of sectors, including health sciences, energy, and national security: business or technology development, negotiating licenses and commercialization agreements, transferring intellectual property rights, and developing and negotiating strategic partnership initiatives at the organizational level.
+ Strong understanding of intellectual property management and commercialization of IP portfolios.
+ Track record of delivering differential ROI through IP commercialization.
+ Strong communication skills internally and externally, across varied markets.
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ MBA or advanced degree in a scientific or technological discipline.
