Overview TRC is seeking a Wastewater Operator to join our ECR, Engineering, Construction, and Remediation team in Chicago, IL and surrounding areas. This position would be a full-time position responsible for chemical control and wastewater treatment operations. This person will be the operator for wastewater treatment plants at railroad facilities. Responsibilities Typical duties for this position would include but not limited to the following tasks: Perform all work associated with the operation, maintenance, basic repair and calibration of equipment, instruments, processes and support systems of an industrial WWTP. Control flow and process wastewater stream and byproducts such as sludge and reclaimed oil. Monitor control panels and adjust controls, valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow, pressure, fluid levels, and treatment processes. Use and calibrate equipment and instruments used to monitor and control treatment plant operations. Maintain shift log, observe variations in operating conditions and records, and interpret meter and gauge readings. Take samples and perform routine field laboratory tests and measurements. Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair WWTP equipment and instrumentation. Utilize data management tools for daily process control, such as computer spreadsheets and programs. Accomplish routine scheduled maintenance and custodial duties as required, maintain the WWTP in a clean and professional condition. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with Railroad employees working at the rail yard in which the WWTP is located, and with regulatory personnel who may periodically inspect the WWTP. Follow oral and written directions. Understand and follow sound safety principles and practices. Respond to emergency alarms at plant within 60 minutes of notification of alarm. Comply with Railroad Safety and Security programs Monitor, inspect and maintain records of the following: Daily rainfall and temperature. Influent, plant process and effluent flow rates and water quality where equipment exists for this purpose. Flow, pH, combustible gas, and all other instrumentation. Chemical inventories, dosages and feed pump settings. Equipment status. Treatment unit status. Reclaimed oil and sludge storage tank level status. Calibration of measurement instrumentation. Other observations required by NPDES and/or POTW permits. Monthly Inspection of all containers and containment structures. Monthly inspection and testing of all overfill alarms Adjust chemical feed rates and equipment operating settings based on daily jar test analysis of the wastewaters to be treated or analysis of sludge generated, when required. Perform routine sampling in compliance with permits, routine sampling of sludge and reclaimed oil storage tanks and tank cars, and treatment process sampling as required to characterize influent conditions and process efficiencies, where required. Perform basic maintenance of pumps, fittings, valves, piping and other equipment used at the WWTP. Coordinate necessary repair work with Railroad personnel and/or other contractors. Direct activities of vacuum truck or industrial liquid moving contractors performing loading and unloading in connection with wastewater treating plant facility operations. Coordinate the disposal of oil contaminated soils, reclaimed oils and/or sludge. Prepare waste manifests for Railroad signature and forwarding to disposal facilities, regulatory agencies and authorized Railroad personnel. Perform general facility housekeeping, including painting, washing and sweeping to maintain a safe, operable, and professional appearing work place. Facilities will be kept free of weeds and vegetation. Provide technical assistance on the bidding of basin cleanings and inspection of contractors. Assistance to include obtaining names of qualified cleaning contractors, review of suitability of work specifications, on-site liaison between cleaning contractor and railroad, verification of cleaning contractor's daily work reports. Comply with requirements of Operations and Maintenance Plan. Update and maintain Operations and Maintenance Plan as required Qualifications Job Requirements: Prepare and maintain the following regulatory and Railroad documentation and/or reports. High school degree, GED, or equivalent with at least 2 years of WWTP operating experience or technical training; or Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Environmental, or Wastewater Engineering. Working knowledge of industrial production techniques, treatment processes, industrial equipment and/or calibration of equipment. Ability to obtain a class K operator's license and maintain all applicable licenses for the state in which the WWTP is located. Possess a high degree of mechanical aptitude and must be knowledgeable about wastewater treatment methods. Ability to perform pump repairs and maintain all mechanical components of the plant. Demonstrated ability to perform required repairs to components. Working knowledge of computer spreadsheets, word processing and data management software. Possess a valid state vehicle operating license at a level determined by project's needs. Must be able to transport self over plant facility. Must be able to ascend and descend stairs and/or ladders. Must be able to lift bags weighing up to 40 pounds each from floor level to waist high. Must be able to bend frequently to collect samples or perform maintenance on equipment. Must be able to work outside in all types of weather. Capable of and trained to work in tight and/or confined spaces. Industrial Wastewater Operator's License is preferred. Compensation: In accordance with local law, the below salary range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors. Other Compensation: Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company’s annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
