Notice of Result letters will not be sent to applicants who respond to this flyer. Responsibilities You will perform wastewater treatment and monitor wastewater treatment equipment. You will perform testing to determine biochemical oxygen demand, suspend solids, dissolved solids, and dissolved oxygen. You will perform secondary wastewater treatment by operating wastewater equipment such as aeration tanks, sand filters, and clarifiers. You will treat industrial wastewater by removing nitrogen, phosphorous, soluble chemicals, oils, and heavy metals. You will perform routine operator maintenance such as lubrication, cleaning, and painting of wastewater equipment. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by 1) Must have a working knowledge of bacterial activity to make necessary tests and take action to correct unsatisfactory sewage conditions as well as working knowledge of chemical reagents and the proper treatment of sewage. 2. Uses shop mathematics in figuring sludge pumped and drawn off into drying beds. Must be able to react blueprints and interpret engineering diagrams and specifications. 3. Must be able to perform routing analysis to evaluate any plant operational adjustments that are required to keep plant effluent within the N.P.D.E.S. parameters. Must be able to make decisions on operational adjustments independently and interpret a variety of gages and meters associated with hypocarnivores, chemical feeders, pumps, settling tanks, filter beds, flow meter's, etc.: ***The candidate must have a New Jersey NJDEP License in all three of the following: Sewage S-2; and Collection System C-3 in order to operate a wastewater treatment plant.*** Applicants must meet the requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualification Handbook for Trades and Labor Occupations. Education Additional Information This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. Several vacancies may be filled. A 40 hour work week is typical for this position. This position requires shift work. Certain incentives (such as Recruitment or Relocation) may be authorized to eligible selectees. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The incumbent performs a considerable amount of walking, standing on concrete floors, climbing stairways, climbing ladders, and walking on uneven ground. The incumbent walks, stands, stoops, bends and climbs steps and slopes up to 45 degree angles. Incumbent performs moderate physical exertion while operating valves, controls, and lifting items. Frequently handles objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift and carry heavier objects with assistance of other workers or with lifting devices. The incumbent uses hoists, dollies, and trucks in moving chemicals to storage locations. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work effort is performed indoors and outside, with exposure to prevailing weather conditions. Works inside in areas that are usually noisy but have adequate light and heat. Exposure to constant noise, rotating machinery, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil, and fumes in the work area are possible. Is exposed to some unpleasant odors and to the possibility of burns, cuts, bruises and broken bones. The incumbent may be subject to cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from chemicals. The incumbent is exposed to danger from climbing, walking around machinery, open pits and chemicals. Exposure to falling into manholes and tanks is possible. The presence of gases, fumes, or airborne particles requires the uses of safety equipment such as gas masks or respirators. The incumbent shall follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as face shields, gloves, hard-toe shoes, hearing protection, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear and may be worn or used for long periods. Work in close, confined spaces and inside equipment may be required. Crawling over and inside machinery may also be required. Occasionally works in awkward and cramped positions.
