About our opportunity: This is this third level in the Water Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents in this classification provide lead guidance, direction, and training to a crew of Water Maintenance Workers, have three years of experience in installing, maintaining, and repairing water system infrastructure, and possess a North Carolina Class B Water Distribution license. - Hiring Rate: $26.00 Essential Duties and Responsibilities + Leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned co-workers: confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co-workers; assists with complex/problem situations and provides technical expertise; assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment; and assists with supervision of co-workers by reporting employee problems and providing input on disciplinary action and employee performance evaluations. + Leads and participates in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water lines and related system components: installs water main taps, lines, and hydrants; clears debris from manholes, water lines, rights of way, easements, valve boxes, hydrants, etc.; inspects and evaluates condition of systems; diagnoses leaks, blockages or other problems; excavates around water mains and hydrants; cuts in valves, tees, and beds; saw cuts driveways, sidewalks, curbs, and roads; removes and replaces service lines and hydrants; checks and greases seals and gaskets; performs confined space entries in manholes; cleans manholes and lines; and changes out rings and lids on manholes, etc. + Receives, prioritizes, and completes work orders: gathers tools and equipment needed to complete work activities; picks up and transports materials, tools, and supplies; cleans and washes equipment and tools; performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs as needed; and notifies supervisor of needed equipment replacements and repairs. + Performs related activities: repairs asphalt, concrete, yards, and other areas that are disrupted as a result of repair work; rakes and preps yards for seed, hay, and sod; and puts out pine straw and lime where needed. + Monitors the adherence to and adheres to established safety procedures: monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project or work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and wears protective gear. + Leads and participate in the operation and maintenance of a variety of equipment, tools, and supplies to complete essential functions, such as backhoe, track hoe, excavator, service truck, dump truck, trailer, loader, tamp, water pump, saws, vac truck, crescent wrenches, pipe wrenches, brick hammers, copper crimpers, impact guns, Sawzall’s, or other equipment, tools, and supplies. + Leads and participates in the performance of general cleaning and maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition: inspects equipment; checks fluid levels; replaces fluid; greases equipment; fuels vehicles, replaces parts; washes and cleans equipment; cleans shop and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty equipment. + Communicates with supervisor, other City employees, vendors, other utility companies, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. + Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives, reviews, prepares, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, activity logs, timesheets, pre-inspection logs, pressure relief valve records, tools and parts sheets, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records. + Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions. Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma or GED required, with vocational or technical training in water distribution or a related field; supplemented by three years of experience in installing, maintaining, and repairing water utility system infrastructure; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Specific License or Certification Required: Must already possess and maintain a valid Class B North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), including appropriate endorsement(s). Must possess and maintain the following additional certifications or licensures: Confined Space Entry, Trenching and Excavation, Flagger, and Class B Water Distribution. Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position. Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered. Data Utilization: Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data. Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships. Human Interaction: Requires the ability to act as lead person or crew leader, providing guidance to a work unit, coordinating activities, and reviewing work of the unit. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver, and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and/or rapid adjustments. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
