The Water Quality Laboratory is responsible for testing the quality of water as it passes through each plant process and the sludge quality as it passes through the solids process. We are hiring multiple Lab Technicians to join our exceptional team at the City's Water Quality Laboratory. + Performs a wide range of technical work and analytical testing that supports the city’s wastewater and utility operations and ensures testing methods comply with all federal, state and city regulations, lab policies and procedures + This position works under immediate/direct supervision Be come part of the City and have an opportunity to make a difference. Essential Functions Conducts high-quality analytical testing in a timely manner in accordance with lab requirements. Performs broad spectrum of wet chemistry testing and assays. Generates data used for regulatory compliance, engineering studies and revenue recovery. Uses defined quality control criteria and standardized operating procedures (SOPs) and methods. Routinely responds and integrates large sample loads and unpredictable sampling events into daily work routine. Performs corrective action and troubleshooting. Reports and calculates data and imports or manually enters data. Perform tasks utilizing personal protective equipment and mechanical controls. Maintains chemical hygiene, storage and safety. Prepares lab instruments and equipment, supplies and samples for testing. Prepares and records laboratory bench stock reagents, calibration standards, glassware, supplies and bench sheets. Assays and calibrates standards. Calibrates lab equipment and runs associated curve checks. Conducts preventative maintenance and performs corrective actions on a variety of laboratory equipment. Documents all maintenance actions and changes in equipment operation or performance. Utilizes specialized techniques and technical instrumentation. Works as a technical lead with environmental division staff during monthly or specialized field sampling and testing in the mobile laboratory. Develops and recommends new or modified standard operating procedures. Conducts research and development on new methods. Communicates ongoing corrective actions with quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) coordinators and lab staff. Provides training on sampling and laboratory testing for wastewater process control to facility operators, lab personnel and outside customers. Assists with the training of new lab personnel and develops and provides state-approved Continuing Education Units (CEU) training. Provides tours of the laboratory facility. Serves as a representative on various city committees. Requirements Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training + Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in chemistry, biology, environmental science or related STEM field, or + Associate's Degree in a STEM field and four years of laboratory experience, or + An equivalent combination of education and/or experience Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training + Advanced degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science or engineering, and + 3 years of analytical lab experience in microbiology, soil science, quality assurance/quality control and instrument maintenance + Wastewater Lab Operator Class I license or higher Level of Knowledge: + QA/QC measures and protocols + Operation and use of a wide variety of laboratory equipment and instruments + Use of scientific calculators + Graphing and algebra + Chemistry, biology, environmental science or engineering + Computer usage including related software Ability To: + Interpret and apply federal, state, and city policies, procedures, laws, codes, rules, and regulations + Evaluate a variety of laboratory tests relating to wastewater, water, bio-solids, and soil + Understand complex technical literature, theory, and instrumentation + Prepare clear, accurate, and concise technical reports and data + Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, co-workers, clients, regulatory agency representatives, and others + Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation. + Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record Licensing And Other Requirements + Valid state-issued driver’s license + Ability to obtain an Idaho Wastewater Treatment Operator Class I or Operator-in-Training license within six months of meeting the Idaho Bureau of Occupational License’s eligibility requirements and a Wastewater Operator Laboratory Class I License. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals. Work areas include wet floors, uneven outdoor walkways, broken glass, sewage, harmful chemicals and compressed gasses. appropriate mechanical controls and personal protective equipment to minimize exposure to caustic chemicals, strong acids, toxic fumes, and heat. Requires handling hot equipment, hot media, and reagents that can cause burns. This position works: weekdays but rotates Saturday coverage. There is occasional overtime, and work schedule adjustments to meet the demands of the stormwater permit, special sampling events, and/or environmental emergencies.
