Wavefront Sensing and Control Engineer, Taara
Software Engineering
Mountain View, CA (HQ)
About the Team:
Project Taara focuses on increasing access to abundant and affordable internet with beams of light (Wireless Optical Communication). Like fiber, but without the cables, Taara uses wireless optical communication to transmit data at super high speeds through the air as a very narrow, invisible beam. Taara has helped bridge a particularly stubborn connectivity gap between Brazzaville (Republic of Congo) and Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo) across the Congo river. More on this topic is available here.
About the Role:
Project Taara is seeking an engineer responsible for modeling, evaluating, and implementing wavefront sensing and control algorithms for our next-generation wireless optical communication products based on photonic integrated circuits. The candidate will be responsible for taking these algorithms from the design phase all the way to deployment on Taara’s embedded platforms in the field. This will involve architecting and simulating wavefront sensing and control systems, assessing performance and implementation trade-offs, and working on their implementation and bring-up on real-time hardware.
The position seeks highly-motivated individuals that enjoy working in a small dynamic team environment, with a passion for solving challenging problems that can lead to high-impact advances in technology.
About the Role:
+ Design, evaluate, and implement wavefront sensing and control algorithms.
+ Participate in deep theoretical analysis, simulation, trade space exploration, and embedded implementation of the system.
+ Use and improve internal Python simulation tools that help evaluate various approaches and their design parameters.
+ Identify ways to optimize the deployment on embedded, real-time DSPs (FPGAs, ASICs) and participate in the implementation and bring-up process.
+ Advise hardware engineers on future photonic and electronic integrated circuits specifications.
+ Motivated by making the world a better place through technology, and wanting to be part of a team that makes this happen.
What you should have:
+ Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or similar discipline.
+ Strong theoretical background in optimization, estimation and control theory.
+ Expertise in closed-loop wavefront sensing and control approaches, and their associated trade-offs.
+ Understanding of atmospheric beam propagation and the consequences of atmospheric turbulence.
+ Experience with real-time software development and embedded platforms
+ Strong coding skills in Python and C/C++ or similar
It would be great if you also had these:
+ Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
+ 4+ years of industry experience designing, implementing and bringing up real-time DSP.
+ Experience with multi-dimensional convex optimization algorithms.
+ Experience working with optical testbeds with wavefront sensors and actuators.
+ Experience interfacing with FPGAs, ASICs.
