Responsibilities
Welds metal components together to fabricate or repair products, such as machine parts, plant equipment, mobile homes, motors and generators, according to layouts, blueprints or work orders, using brazing and a variety of arc and gas welding equipment
Welds metal parts together, using both gas welding or brazing and any combination of arc welding processes, performs related tasks such as thermal cutting and grinding, repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes and increases size of metal parts, positions and clamps together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to welding
Locate and repair cracks in industrial engine cylinder heads, using inspection equipment and gas torch, may perform repairs only and be required to pass employer performance tests or standard tests to meet certification standards of Governmental agencies or professional and technical associations
Using accepted trade methods and a variety of manual welding processes, performs welding duties using electric, acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding processes to weld various types of metals in various sizes, shapes, and thickness, including dissimilar metals
Work is performed in a flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead position
Work processes include pre-heating, hazing, bead welding, tack welding, flame cutting, and heat treating
Utilize shielded arc, metal inert gas (MIG), tungsten inert gas (TIG), and silver brazing oxygen/acetylene cutting plasma arc methods to fabricate and repair aluminum, steel and armor plate materials
Capable of welding dissimilar metals such as copper to steel
Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, sketches and diagrams
Applies knowledge of welding standards and how various metals and alloys react to different welding standards and how various metals and alloys react to different welding processes and techniques
Welds metal parts and structures that may vary in size, shape and thickness.
Welders must be able to lay out work, positioning and clamping templates; jigs and other guides to repair, modify, or fabricate metal items for all types of equipment including the repair of light and intricate made mechanical parts which must fit to close tolerance
Welds stainless steel and aluminum, where complete penetration/fusion is required and where close tolerances must be met
Adjusts machine to penetration/fusion is required and where close tolerances must be met
Adjusts machine to permit welding materials of various thickness
Work is usually performed on concrete floors or as required on or in equipment being repaired
Subject to burns and eye injury when welding
Danger from electric shock and falls from scaffolds or ladders, infrared or ultraviolet rays, fumes and gases
Qualifications
Must be a US Citizen with ability to pass a thorough background check to obtain a government clearance and pre-employment drug test.
Must pass a pre-employment physical and then pass an annual employment physical.
Must be qualified and certified to American Welding Society (AWS) Standard certifications as follows:
AWS D17.1.
AWS 17.1 GMAW 1/4 Aluminum.
AWS 17.1 GTAW 1/8 Aluminum.
AWS 17.1 FCAW 1/2 Steel.
AWS 17.1 GMAW 1/2 Steel.
Or ability to obtain above certifications within 120 days from start of employment.
Capable of welding dissimilar metals such as copper to steel.
Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, sketches and diagrams.
Must be able to work standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling and climbing.
Must be able to work in awkward and cramped quarters.
May handle objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Must be comfortable and able to work in and environment that has constant exposure to dirt, grease, noise, odors, smoke and fumes with requirement for protective equipment such as: safety glasses, ear plugs, safety shoes, aprons, gloves, welding helmets, and goggles.
