Welder (Certified)
The Welder (Certified) position, under direct supervision, use hand welding and flame cutting equipment such as arc welders, gas welders, and gas torches to weld together metal components (flat, horizontal, or vertical plates and pipes). Additional responsibilities, work from sketches, prints, operation sheets, preliminary drawings, and written/verbal instructions. In addition, must maintain welding specifications and set up and operate all welding equipment.

· Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as MIG, gas metal arc (GMAW) and Stick, shielded metal arc (SMAW).
· Position parts in jigs or fixtures on bench or floor, or clamp parts together along layout marks.
· Select torch, torch tip, filler rod and flux, according to welding chart specifications or type and thickness of metal.
· Connect regulator valves and hoses to oxygen and fuel gas cylinders and welding torch.
· Turn regulator valves to activate flow of gases, light torch and adjust gas mixture and pressure, to obtain desired flame, based on knowledge of gas-welding techniques.
· Hold torch at proper angle to metal and guides along weld joint, applying filler rod to molten area to form weld.
· Examine weld for bead size and other specifications.
· Perform basic troubleshooting of welding machine and welding accessories.
· Repair bad welds, fix broken or cracked metal objects, fill holes and build up metal parts.
· Chip or grind off excess weld, slag or spatter.
· High degree of adherence to quality standards is mandatory, as welds are visible and welding work to be done correctly.
· Stamp welds by using designated welding stamp.
· Add various combinations of a structure's pieces prior to ordering materials for a project in order to avoid ordering excess amounts.
· Measure pieces for structures using International System of Units (SI) to the Imperial measurement system; and convert measurements from both systems as needed.
· Input data and operate plasma cutting machines, orbital welders and any other computer controlled equipment.
Credentials
· High School Diploma or equivalent general education.
· Post-Secondary training as a welder is preferred.
· Current CWB welding tickets preferred.
· Minimum five years MIG welding experience, related technical competence and a comprehensive understanding of production processes & welding equipment.
· Able to successfully pass a blueprint reading as well as a weld test.
· Training on how to operate and adjust Yaskawa Motoman welding equipment if operating robotic welding machines.
· Welders are required by various codes (i.e. CSA, ASME) to retake practical tests within a specific period of time.
