Wellness Director

Our Y is seeking a dynamic, team-oriented Wellness Director to provide leadership to the Wellness Department.

Job Description

Under the guidance of the CEO, the Wellness Director is responsible for guiding members in the pursuit of improved well-being, by delivering health and wellness options that will support them on their wellness journey.  The Director will build a team to best deliver those options, to include: personal training, innovative programming, group fitness for all levels and ages, on-boarding and retention of members, outreach in the local community and healthy living engagements.  The Director will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Wellness Center, including the training and supervision of Wellness Coaches.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, coordinating and conducting member orientations as part of the YMCA’s GPS program, addressing member complaints, resolving problems, maintaining cleanliness of the Wellness Center and assisting in preventative maintenance of equipment.  Additionally, the Wellness Director will assist with day-to-day operations of the YMCA as needed, attend and assist with fundraisers and special events, and assist with the Annual Support Campaign.  The Wellness Director must be willing to work flexible hours to meet the needs of members, to include some nights and weekends. 

Qualifications

1.  Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science or related field OR a minimum of 5 years fitness/wellness experience. 

2.  Minimum of one year experience supervising wellness, group exercise, and personal training programs preferred. 

3.  Minimum of six months experience in a rehab setting preferred. 

4.  Minimum age requirement of 21. 

5.  CPR, First Aid, AED certification within 30 days of hire. 

6.  Completion of YMCA program specific certifications. 

7.  ACSM or NSCA, or relevant equivalent, certification within 90 days of hire. 

8.  Climbing Wall belay certification within 90 days of hire. 

9.  Demonstrated ability to train, mentor, and develop staff. 

10. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. 

11. Must be able to conduct group fitness classes. 

12. Team oriented.

Essential Functions

1.  Understand the “health seeker” mentality, and guide members in their pursuit of improved well-being by engaging, supporting, guiding, involving and providing a broad range of innovative programs, activities and events that meet their interests and needs.  Included in this is successful implementation of the YMCA’s GPS program, and utilization of FitPath.  Other examples may include group fitness, individual and small group coaching/personal training, and chronic disease prevention.

2.  Create an environment where members are welcomed and engaged while using the Wellness Center.

3.  Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise & evaluate all Wellness Staff, to include Wellness Coaches, Group Fitness Instructors, and Climbing Wall Belayers.

4.  Implement and evaluate, wellness, group exercise, and personal training programs that promote membership enrollment and retention.  Direct wellness staff to support health and wellness initiatives to achieve retention goals. 

5.  Collaboratively work with members through the YMCA’s GPS program to provide ongoing coaching, goal setting, and exercise prescription.     

6.  Actively pursue training, learning opportunities and certifications as they relate to job responsibilities, for self and staff.  Monitor applicable certifications (CPR/First Aid/AED, Belay, Group Exercise specific, etc.) for all Wellness Staff.

7.  Proactively take the lead in the Wellness Center as far as all areas are concerned (staff development, equipment needs, Health & Wellness programs, appearance of rooms, response to members, broken equipment, and cleanliness).

8.  Provide exceptional customer service to all members utilizing the Wellness Center, Climbing Wall, and participating in group fitness classes.

9.  Portray exemplary use of Listen First skills to build group relationships, network members and create opportunities for health seekers to connect and build communities with each other.  Initiate conversations with members that help encourage, motivate, and assist.

10. Maintain basic knowledge of other program offerings to help serve the needs and interests of members.

11. Assist with inside and outside promotion of wellness programs.

12. Actively support and participate in YMCA functions.

13.  Plan and implement healthy living events at the YMCA, to include Healthy Kids Day and bi-annual fitness challenges.

14. Ensure proper implementation of Wellness Center schedules to provide maximum opportunities for member/staff connections. 

15. Establish systems for regularly scheduled fitness equipment inspections and preventative maintenance.  Coordinate repairs that are beyond the scope of the YMCA’s Facilities Director, in a timely manner, to minimize equipment downtime. 

16. Order new equipment for all areas as needed.

17. Review and evaluate Group Fitness program and trends and make recommendations for changes. 

18. Meet with and work in collaboration with Group Fitness Instructors to create a quarterly Group Fitness schedule that will incorporate new ideas and group fitness trends that best serve the needs and interests of members.

19. Conduct personal training sessions for members.

20. Schedule yearly inspection for Climbing Wall and equipment. 

Required Certifications
