Winter/Spring Internship - Women's Economic Empowerment Intern - Unpaid

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:

The Women’s Economic Empowerment Internship supports female refugee and asylum-seeking clients served by the IRC, in identifying employment and unique and non-traditional career opportunities. Many female clients experience additional barriers to employment, including childcare needs and full-time home-making responsibilities. Interns will also support resource development, client education, maternal health programming, and volunteer support.

COMMITMENT: 8-10 hours per week. One semester/4 months

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Employment Support: Help clients to identify soft & hard skillsets that can be translated to jobs; Assist clients in resume writing or job applications; Research employment OR mentorship opportunities that are close to clients’ homes, or accessible to transit lines
• Resource Development: Conduct targeted outreach with employers or industry professionals that may be willing to hire women with limited English proficiency and work experience
• Education: Work collaboratively with the education department to support women’s empowerment week; Assist clients in pursuing an industry specific certification
• Maternal Health: support the weekly ordering and distribution of new baby supplies for clients.
• Volunteer Corps: Support the volunteers of the Women’s Economic Empowerment Volunteer Corps with admin tasks.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The Women’s Economic Empowerment Volunteer will gain much knowledge about the process of resettling newly arrived refugees. They will understand the barriers to economic self-sufficiency that our clients face and the creative solutions IRC implements. Interns will be given the opportunity to interact with clients directly and will gain experience in training and cross cultural communication. As a part of this internship, all interns will be required to complete a housing set up, sit in on casework and cash intakes, participate in job clubs (as needed) and attend at least 2 Economic Empowerment team meetings (1st Thursday of every month, from 2-3:30pm)

SUPERVISION: This position reports to the Early Employment Supervisor.
