1.The Wits Transformational Gift Fundraiser in the United States of America ( Fundraiser ) will work with the Director, and Fundraising Manager, of the Wits Development and Fundraising Office to drive activities with the objective of achieving transformational investments in the University of the Witwatersrand s ambitious plans and projects, flowing from the Centenary and subsequent fundraising campaigns.
2.The primary role of the Fundraiser is to drive transformational fundraising for the University s major strategic projects. The key sectors to be targeted by the incumbent for fundraising are wealthy individuals (largely alumni) and selected Trusts and Foundations in the USA and Canada that are classified according to the Wits giving levels of Diamond, Platinum and Palladium (R500,000 to R50,000,000).
3.The Fundraiser will be responsible for identifying opportunities and planning approaches within the targeted donor and prospect sectors and will be expected to make direct solicitations.
4.The Fundraiser will report directly to the Director and/or Fundraising Manager of the Wits Development and Fundraising Office and will work with the Wits USA Representative and the Wits Fund Inc Board and Fundraising Committee, and all of the Heads of the Advancement Units (Alumni Relations, Communications, Marketing, Functions and Events, and Operations) and where appropriate, with other members of the Wits community.
5.Key activities and responsibilities include:
5.1.Approximately 70% of the Fundraiser s time will be spent on Transformational Gift Fundraising activities which include (but are not limited to) the following: Focused one-on-one meetings with prospects and donors, Focused group meetings with prospects and donors, Boardroom lunches with prospects and donors, Donor stewardship and reporting, Cultivating and managing Wits Fundraising Campaign Ambassadors, Working closely with the Wits Fund Inc Board and Fundraising Committee, the Wits Development and Fundraising Office Director, and the Wits USA Representative to implement the fundraising plans for the University s major strategic projects, Planning and executing fundraising events, meetings and activities for the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Senior Executive Team members, academics and researchers, the Wits Development and Fundraising Office, the Advancement Division, the Wits Fund Inc Board Members and Fundraising Committee Members, with the assistance of the Wits US Representative, Working with the Wits Development and Fundraising Director, Fundraising Manager and Research Officer to identify and cultivate prospective donors, Developing, with the Wits Development and Fundraising Director and/or Fundraising Manager, a jointly agreed list of potential transformational gift donors to be approached, with the number of identified prospects and donors being targeted at each level of giving being reviewed and refreshed biannually, Updating and analysing the geographical distribution of Wits alumni in the USA and Canada and in so doing:oReviewing the top priority cities through overlaying the alumni footprint with potential transformational gift prospects, andoEnsuring that there is capacity for transformational gift prospect solicitation across these major cities, Collaborating with the Wits Development and Fundraising Office s Global Teams on overlapping strategic projects and the utilisation of the extensive transformational gift prospect networks being pursued by Wits fundraisers across the world, as and when appropriate, and Creating innovative ways to channel donations around unifying priorities that resonate with alumni.
5.2.About 30% of the Fundraiser s time will be spent on complementary activities which include (but are not limited to) the following: Advancement Activities:oFocused bespoke communications targeted at prospects and donors, Assisting with the compilation of the Howzit USA Newsletters, Reach out to prominent high nett worth alumni to be interviewed, and Assisting with the drafting articles and other multimedia activities,oAssisting the Alumni Relations Office to reconnect with Alumni in the USA and Canada through planned prospect and donor interactions and at any planned Wits Alumni Reunions,oWorking with the Marketing team and the Wits USA Country Representative on content updates for the Wits DFO and Wits Fund Inc websites and paid, owned, earned and social media (and other) platforms,oCollaborating with the Communications Unit on Wits USA and Canadian stories to be told and published on Wits paid, earned, owned and (other) social media platforms, and oThrough the Development and Fundraising Office, assist the Vice-Chancellor s Office with any follow-ups and follow-throughs after the Vice-Chancellor has interacted with targeted prospects and major gift donors.
Fundraising Administration Activities:oMaintain and update the CRM system with prospect and donor information, planned actions, interactions, and projects,oMaintain an up-to-date transformational gift prospect approach plan that reflects all key developments on approaches,oAssist the Wits USA Country Representative with any donation documentation for Wits Fund Inc and Wits University governance processes,oProvide weekly reports in weekly meetings with the Director and Fundraising Manager of the Wits Development and Fundraising Office,oProvide fortnightly reports and updates in the Wits Global Fundraising Meetings,oProvide monthly reports to the Wits Fund Inc Board, andoProvide quarterly reports to the Wits Development and Fundraising Office to be presented to the Wits Foundation Board of Governors, and the Senior Executive Team.
6.Responsibilities: High-level project management of fundraising activities related to University priority projects and initiatives, Establishing effective relationships across the donor community in the USA and Canada, Researching, writing and submitting funding proposals, Identifying and securing transformational funding for the University s priority projects and initiatives, Stewardship of existing donors and actively re-engaging past donors, Contributing to the continued expansion of the prospect database, its accuracy and the quality and application of its data, and Monitoring trends and innovations in the external environment to identify fundraising and development opportunities that are aligned with the Wits focus areas.
Brief Description
7.Requirements:
Minimum of a Bachelor s degree or equivalent, Five years of related work experience (preferably in a University/donor environment), A good understanding and first-hand experience of South Africa s higher education sector and political landscape vis-a-vis the rest of the world, A good understanding of the University of the Witwatersrand and its positioning within the South African higher education sector, and the rest of the world, Ability to favourably position Wits amongst high nett worth alumni living in the US and to network and engage with high-level stakeholders including alumni, donors, potential donors and other parties, Excellent command of the English language (written and verbal), Proven experience in securing funding, Ability to work quickly and under pressure to meet changing deadlines, Excellent information gathering and management skills, and Willing to travel within the USA and Canada, and to South Africa if needed.

9.The following competencies will be advantageous: Knowledge of the Wits alumni and donor network in South Africa, the USA, and Canada, An understanding of fundraising processes and methods in South Africa, the USA and Canada, Knowledge and understanding of philanthropy and the US markets, Understanding the donor environment in the USA and Canada, and A donor network and established relationships in South Africa, the USA, and Canada.
