WOC - Research Statistician
Summary The VA Research Program strives to promote Veteran-centered care to improve patient experiences and outcomes across VA healthcare and community settings, and to advance value-driven care by providing Veterans the highest quality care at the lowest financial burden. The Without Compensation (WOC) Research Statistician position is vital within the Office of Research and Development (ORD) and the facilities where research programs are conducted. Responsibilities Extract data for analysis from large clinical and administrative databases. Data cleaning and preparation for analysis. Evaluation of datasets for outliers and erroneous data with revision of datasets as needed based upon discussion with the research team. Work with the research team to troubleshoot and handle missing data. Execution of complex data analysis using statistical software based in the competencies outlined below. Preparation of data for presentation in the form of tables and figures. Interpretation of data analysis and modification of the analytic plan. Revise analyses as needed based upon discussion with the research team. Assist in creating figures and tables to be used in manuscripts prepared from the statistical analyses. Maintenance of regulatory paperwork related to research permission and access to VA data according to VHA regulatory policies. Design, test, implement and monitor data collected as part of health status questionnaires, production and testing to ensure validity and reliability, and trouble shooting during the course of the study. Organize data within the VA VINCI environment. Performs other duties as assigned. The work of this position involves conceptualizing, designing, initiating, formulating, planning, executing, and disseminating the statistical methods for a wide range of research projects; providing methodological expertise as the senior statistician to top level subject matter specialists and agency officials responsible for broad research and operational programs; advising and consulting on a variety of problems involving the theory or application of statistical methods; originating new statistical methods for projects of a broad and comprehensive nature; and planning, directing, and coordinating a variety of specialized and complex statistical analyses. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/25/2024. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Degree conferred that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing. or Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. Physical Requirements: The work is essentially sedentary and is usually accomplished with routine computer equipment and office furniture. Travel may be required to other local offices, VHA facilities, or study sites to participate in site meetings or conferences, conduct data gathering or validation for special projects or to attend professional conferences or meetings. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, and residences or commercial vehicles.
