JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Director of Athletics and Recreation, the Head Coach leads a competitive intercollegiate athletics sports program. The head coach is devoted to the full time performance of the duties as outlined in the job description, and any additional duties required by the Director of Athletics and Recreation that may be assigned. The head coach allocates resources to meet schedules and achieve success, identifies program objectives, and develops and directs strategies for successful programs. The head coach is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the sports program, and provides guidance to other personnel including assistant coaches. The head coach's duties and responsibilities shall be conducted in accordance with the NCAA's, University's, and Department's policies, procedures, and rules as established.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: Salary By Agreement $60,000 - $80,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Leads a competitive varsity athletic team program that promotes the values of leadership, scholarship, teamwork, discipline, commitment, resilience, positive sportsmanship and high ethical standards.Demonstrates a commitment to fostering an educational environment that prioritizes the academic, athletic, and personal development of student-athletes from diverse backgrounds and identities, ensuring an inclusive and supportive atmosphere.Proposes the strategies and goals for the sports program on a short and long-term basis.Plans, schedules and supervises practices that condition and train athletes, ensure safety, develop skills and teach Principles of Community.Prepares student-athletes in strategic preparation, coaches team at competitive events and performs game management.Evaluates student-athlete's performance and designs instructional opportunities to improve technical and strategic implementation based on sound motor learning and biomechanical principles.Schedules all contests; works in concert with sport operations staff for scheduling and event management and assists in hosting home competitions and tournaments.Ensures adherences to all governing rules, university, department, conference, NCAA policies and procedures.Develops and implements an effective recruitment plan within the framework of the university, department, conference, NCAA rules. This includes the effective identification, evaluation, recruitment and retainment of student athletes to maintain a competitive athletic program.Exemplifies professionalism and sportsmanship during contests, at practice and in all interactions with players, opponents, officials, parents, spectators, and administrators. Represents and promotes professional conduct, university good will and high standards at all promotional and media-related events.Hires, leads, and supervises all other members of the coaching staff within the sport program. Effectively mentors and develops coaching staff to serve the goals and expectations of the UCSC Athletics and Recreation departments.Provides game results information/quotes/articles to the Sports Information Director.Ensures attendance by student-athletes at all mandatory meetings/orientations and has at least two players to serve on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.Assesses prospective student-athletes athletic and academic ability in keeping with DIII competitive and UCSC admission standards.Creates and maintains detailed files on all prospective student-athletes with contact dates and times and other pertinent information.Understands basic eligibility rules and provides immediate student-athlete information to the Compliance and Eligibility Coordinator upon request. Creates and maintains detailed files on all prospective student-athletes with contact dates and times and other pertinent information.Observes contests, reviews video and hosts campus visits for prospective student-athletes.Understands and adheres to all recruiting legislation, and passes the annual NCAA DIII Bylaws Test.Reports and documents student-athlete conduct violations, incidents that may be crimes, and crimes (including hazing) to the appropriate personnel or authority.Proposes budgets and grants, reconciles expenses and proposes purchases for sport program.Proactively tracks, reviews and monitors budget to identify discrepancies, and works with Business Operations to resolve budget issues and realign expenses, revenue, and fundraising.Strategically develops and supervises all fundraising events for the program and department including: event marketing, facility reservations, budget planning, staffing, etc.Keeps inventory of team acquired practice gear, uniforms, and sport equipment.Travels to contests by driving University, rental and/or personal vehicle. This may include University vans or rental vansTravels for recruiting or conference attendance by driving rental and/or personal vehicle.Reads and understands guidelines, rules and other information in the UCSC student handbook, student-athlete handbook and administrative handbook.Adheres to all legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines of the Federal and State Government, University of California Office of the President, UCSC, NCAA and Athletic Department.

Attends all administrative meetings and serves on committees upon request.Assists University Relations and Athletic Department in all department fundraisers.Performs administrative duties including maintaining the online Google calendar.Submits departmental and University paperwork that is complete, accurate, and on time.Regularly participates in anti-hazing training and workshops.Attends training sessions which include but are not limited to: Staff Human Resources Orientation, Employee Expectations and Goals, Business Practices, Procedures, and Expectations, Google, software, etc.Teaches physical education courses in the required Physical Education program, engaging students outside the varsity teams in fitness and recreational activity classes.Supervises and mentors all Assistant and Volunteer Administrators.Develops and recommends to the Athletic Director team expectations. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / trainingHighly advanced and effective interpersonal, motivational and team leadership skills to work effectively with athletic participants, staff and parents of student athletes.Ability to demonstrate creativity, sound judgment and decision-making; be an effective problem solver.Highly effective communicating verbally and in writing and for live media presentations.Recognized expertise in team sport and coaching principles for student athletes.Supervisory and leadership skills to mentor and develop assistant coaches and / or program instruction staff.Current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree in kinesiology, sports administration, physical education, athletic training or related field.At least 4 years experience competing as an intercollegiate student-athlete. At least 2 years experience as head coach of an intercollegiate team.Experience in fundraising Including experience working and/or directing sport specific clinics and camps.Experience in budget management.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
