Summary This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief of Operations, Superintendent, Library Buildings and Grounds, Assistant Superintendent, Tenant Services Division, Projects Branch, Wood Crafting Section. The incumbent is responsible for providing complete wood crafting services for various construction and renovation projects throughout the Library Buildings and Grounds. Responsibilities TOUR OF DUTY: Monday - Friday 6AM-2:30PM Wood Crafting and Carpentry (100%) Makes and repairs high grade wooden items such as cabinetry, furniture and decorative woodwork. These items have intricate, precise and fancy features and details such as curved and contoured surfaces, book-matched panels, scrollwork, friezes, inlays and complex joints. Selects, cuts, turns, shapes, joins, bonds, fits, assembles and decorates wooden materials and parts, using the full range of hand and power woodworking tools, machines and techniques to create superior and structurally reliable wood work which requires exact fitting and close weight, pressure and size tolerances to construct specialty furniture. The incumbent uses a wide knowledge of wood supplies and precision woodworking methods and their alternatives to plan and lay out their work from specifications, blueprints, rough sketches and verbal instructions, taking into consideration the tooling, durability, cost, strength and appearance characteristics of a variety of softwoods, hardwoods, plywood, veneers and wood substitutes for projects. The work may involve construction, alteration, repair or modification of items and structures (such as wood and metal stud wall framework, walls, moldings, wood flooring, suspended ceilings, dry wall, doors, door frames, finished paneling, windows, counter tops, interior and exterior trim) where accuracy, spacing and fit are essential to structural soundness and appearance. Does routine maintenance on equipment, including lubricating machines, changing and sharpening saw blades and adjusting drive belt tensions. The incumbent utilizes knowledge of and must comply with all OSHA safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner. The position also provides or receives training, either on the job or through classroom training, to ensure the utilization of all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), etc. Performs other related duties as assigned. WS-10: Knowledge of and skill in using a wide range of woodworking machining techniques to set up, adapt and use appropriate machines, tools and accessories to accomplish projects.
