Summary This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief of Operations, Superintendent, House Office Buildings, Assistant Superintendent, Tenant Services Division; Carpentry Branch. The Wood Crafter will perform a wide range of carpentry projects in support of the House Office Buildings. Responsibilities The Tour of Duty will range from: 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM HOURS MAY CHANGE DUE TO OPERATING NEEDS OF MANAGEMENT This position is emergency essential - Depending on the type of emergency the employee may be required to report to work during emergency situations. Major Duties: Makes and repairs high-grade wooden items such as cabinetry, furniture, and decorative woodwork. These items have intricate, precise and fancy features and details such as curved and contoured surfaces, book-matched panels, scrollwork, friezes, inlays, and complex joints. Selects, cuts, turns, shapes, joins, bonds, fits, assembles, and decorates wooden materials and parts using a variety of hand and power woodworking tools, machines, and techniques to create superior and structurally reliable woodwork which requires exact fitting and close weight, pressure, and size tolerances. Uses a wide knowledge of wood supplies and precision woodworking methods to plan and lay out work from specifications, blueprints, rough sketches, and verbal instructions, taking into consideration the tooling, durability, cost, strength, and appearance characteristics of a variety of softwoods, hardwoods, plywood, veneers, and wood substitutes for projects. Performs work that may involve construction, alteration, repair or modification of items and structures (such as wood and metal stud wall framework, walls, moldings, wood flooring, suspended ceilings, dry wall, doors, door frames, finished paneling, windows, counter tops, interior and exterior trim) where accuracy, spacing and fit are essential to structural soundness and appearance. Follows all relevant safety rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures. Must utilize knowledge of and must comply with all OSHA safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner. Receives training, either on the job or through classroom training, to ensure that all safety practices and equipment are fully utilized. Must ensure the use of any required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Performs routine maintenance on equipment, including lubricating machines, changing and sharpening saw blades and adjusting drive belt tensions. Utilizes specialized maintenance management software (TMA or other) to manage, update and close out work orders. Performs other related duties as assigned.
