COMPENSATION

Hourly Minimum - Maximum$23.00 - $25.00

JOB SUMMARY

In support of the Mortuary Science programs at educational institutions, Forest Lawn’s Work Study Program provides students with an opportunity to receive exposure to, and experience in, various aspects of the Mortuary profession during the internship. The main objective of the program is to prepare students for a successful career in the Mortuary profession.  

This part-time position will learn and perform Funeral Service and Service Arrangements duties and will shadow Memorial Counselors aligning their work duties with the clinical competencies, if required, in their Mortuary Science program. They may also learn and perform embalming and assist with other mortuary-related duties (dressing, casketing, and cosmetics), aligning their work duties with the Embalming Clinicals of the Mortuary Science program. Modifications to this position may be made to align with the specific clinical competencies of their Mortuary Science Programs in attendance.  

We are located in: Glendale, Hollywood Hills, Cypress, Long Beach, Covina Hills, Coachella, and Cathedral City.

This position may be extended to other Work Study positions until the student graduates. The determination of extensions, offering conversion to Advanced Work Study Student, Student Apprentice, or other Forest Lawn positions, will be based on the student’s work performance during their period of employment, remaining in good academic standing (maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0), and Forest Lawn openings. 

Hours of work will be accommodated to meet the student’s schedule, up to 20 hours a week.  
 

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

Student will have the ability to job shadow and participate in the following essential duties within each department:  

Funeral Service 

Conduct Religious Services, Military Services, Visitation and Vigils (which include greeting/ushering families, distribution of prayer cards/memory folders; traffic control; casket bearing) 

Transfer of Remains  

Service Arrangements/Guest Services 

Death Certificates 

Interment Permits  

Memory Folders 

Prayer cards  

Obituaries 

Working with government agencies  

Interactions/arrangements with families  

Reception 

Memorial Counseling 

Observe arrangements meetings 

Work with Memorial Counseling Assistant  

Mortuary 

First Calls/Notification of Death 

Dressing /Casketing/Cosmeticizing  

Visitation room set-up 

Review of mortuary related paperwork/documentation 

Other duties 

Assist with maintaining a safe work environment and abiding by all safety standards.  

Represent Forest Lawn by following our high standards of customer service and ethics  

Maintain positive relationships with all Forest Lawn employees and foster a teamwork environment.  

Other duties as needed. 

Students who are obtaining an Embalming Clinical Requirement for their Mortuary Science program will also have the ability to job shadow and participate in the following essential duties in the Mortuary department:  

Raising Vessels 

Mixing Fluids 

Injecting Fluids 

Cavity Treatment 

Suturing incisions 

Posing/setting features 

First Calls/Notification of Death 

Dressing /Casketing/Cosmetizing  

Visitation room set-up 

Review of mortuary related paperwork/documentation 

Completing Case Reports 

Advanced Work Study Students will be responsible for work duties described above to further their knowledge and experience in this profession. Job duties may vary to align with the clinical competencies required in the semester of the Mortuary Science program.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Must be currently enrolled and attending the Mortuary Science program with Cypress College.Must have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA and be in good academic standing.Provide proof of transcripts showing current enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcripts may be accepted).Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs.Must have a valid California Driver’s License

DRUG TESTING POLICY

Prior to beginning employment, all job applicants who receive a job offer will be required to voluntarily submit to a drug screening test conducted by a laboratory designated by Forest Lawn. The drug screening method is a hair collection test that will detect the use of illegal drugs within the past 90 days. A positive drug test may result in the withdrawal of the job offer.

Forest Lawn has registered to participate in the federal government's E-Verify program.
