This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. All eligible candidates must meet the minimum and selective qualifications by the closing date. Nature of Work: The main purpose of the Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC) Inspector is to assist the District 7 Traffic Engineering Team with the protection of workers and the public, by ensuring work zone traffic control is implemented safely and correctly in accordance with state and national standards. These duties will be carried out through physical inspection of the work zone traffic control setups and initiating timely corrective action as necessary. The main responsibilities of this position will include the following: conduct regular daytime and nighttime field inspections of work zone setups in all phases, to assess their compliance with SHA’s standards and guidelines; document inspection findings daily using SHA’s online Temporary Traffic Control Inspection Rating System; help Project Engineers or Traffic Managers in determining the best work zone set-ups for standalone projects or overlapping projects where setups may need to be combined; represent Traffic at various construction meetings and convey work zone safety expectations to the contractor; monitor the Lane Closure Permits System as well as review, approve/reject/modify permit applications as necessary; and assist the District 7 Traffic Engineering Team when there is little to no construction activity due to weather or holiday work restrictions. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Experience: Five (5) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning. Selective Qualification: One (1) year of experience in roadway or utility maintenance, construction, or inspection. *This statement contains a selective qualification, which is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification. Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill or ability). Notes: 1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience, up to a maximum of three years. 2. Applicants who possess an associate's degree in either engineering, construction management or surveying or surveying technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the five-year experience requirement. Licenses & Certifications Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the state of Maryland with less than four (4) points.
