Youth Care Worker

The Youth Care Worker position assists the Residential program in creating a safe, structured, and nurturing environment that helps foster personal, social, and intellectual development in the youth we serve. To accomplish these vital tasks, the Youth Care Worker employee works closely with all residents as well as the entire team at Brookhaven Treatment and Learning Center. The Youth Care Worker employee is responsible for ensuring close supervision, providing program activities, and supporting residents in their daily life skills. Qualifications for this position include at least two years of experience working directly with youth preferably with specialized needs or in a behavioral health setting.
* Tuesday - Saturday 6:30am-2:30pm (1 opening)
* Sunday - Thursday 2:30pm -10:30pm (1 opening)
* Wednesday - Friday 2:30-10:30 & Saturday 6:30am-10:30pm (1 opening)
* Sunday - Thursday 10:30pm - 6:30 am (1 opening)
Essential Functions:
1. Provide constant safety and supervision of children.
2. Provide a therapeutic milieu that supports the children in working on treatment goals.
3. Communicate and interact effectively with all team members.
4. Adapt to changing situations while carrying out all assigned duties.
5. Support the philosophy and mission of the program.
6. Demonstrate regular on-time attendance.
7. Respond positively to supervision and constructive feedback.
8. Maintain accurate and timely documentation as well as confidentiality of client information.
9. Follow all Brookhaven policies and standards of care.
10. Adopt a professional demeanor and work habits while providing direct care, performing duties, and acting as part of a multidisciplinary team at Brookhaven.
Physical Demands
The Youth Care Worker position may at times be physically demanding and can involve situations such as frequent standing, walking, running, kneeling, engaging in recreational activities with youth, and intervening in crisis situations. Employment may be conditioned on passing an initial physical ability screening and maintaining this level of ability. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions as appropriate.
Work Environment
Brookhaven strives to provide a professional work setting that is respectful, courteous, and supportive for all employees. The specific work environment associated with the Youth Care Worker position can be variable. The job can frequently involve exposure to outside weather conditions and indoor noise levels that can become moderate to loud. In providing direct care for multiple youth residing at Brookhaven with specialized mental health needs, employees may encounter children who have challenging behaviors and who can become verbally abusive or physically aggressive. At the same time, staff may encounter conditions typical of caring for youth in any setting such as children becoming ill with colds and flu or exposing staff to bodily fluids. At all times, safety is a priority and staff receive considerable training, supervision, and support as well as protective equipment when needed to help manage and mitigate any risks arising from these conditions.
The work hours of a Youth Care Worker employee can include weekdays, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays. In addition, on-call duties may be shared and rotated between Youth Care Worker staff. A Youth Care Worker employee may also be mandated to work/remain on a shift or incur overtime in times of a staffing emergency or shortage.
Job Responsibilities/Duties (may include but are not limited to the following):
1. Assist in providing a constant safe environment for our youth.
2. Support youth in their treatment goals.
3. Assist with small group instruction.
4. Monitor and document youth progress.
5. Use appropriate behavior management & trauma informed techniques to maintain positive interactions with youth.
6. Motivate youth through effective communication and evaluative feedback.
7. Set and enforce expectations for youth achievement and behavior.
8. Oversee and distribute medication consistent with training.
9. Maintain all necessary resident records.
10. Generate program activity ideas.
11. Facilitate daily therapeutic, recreational, and social activities with youth.
12. Assist in providing for the general physical and emotional needs of the youth we serve.
13. Attend staff meetings as directed by your supervisor.
14. Safeguard client privacy and confidentiality.
15. Rotate and maintain availability during on-call responsibilities.
16. Complete all required training.
17. Adhere to Brookhaven’s defined policies and procedures.
18. Perform other duties as assigned by the Team Leader, Lead Youth Care Worker, or as directed by the Residential Coordinator or other administrators.
