USU Extension in Salt Lake County is expanding its Youth Court initiative and is seeking part-time facilitators to support the operations of weekly Youth Court hearings in West Valley and Kearns. The Youth Court program uses a restorative justice-based approach, where referred youth participate in hearings that are run by a panel of their peers. This program provides an alternative justice process for youth who have admitted to engaging in minor offenses, in lieu of going through the formal juvenile court system and having the offense on their record. Through this program, youth court panelists gain valuable leadership skills through trainings and experience leading the hearings. They also serve as mentors for referred youth and determine what actions need to be completed by the referred youth to make amends, take accountability for their actions, and strengthen their ties to school, family, and community.
The role of Youth Court Facilitators involves a variety of responsibilities, including managing eligibility screening and intake processes for referred youth and their parents, providing oversight for court operations, and recruiting and managing the youth panel.
