Job Description
This cause-driven leader supports the growth of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Oversees primarily the operations of 3 summer day camps and other seasonal camp related events and programming. Responsible for growth and development of camp programming, expansion of camps, and camp outreach throughout the community. Acts as a liaison to committees and advisory boards and works collaboratively with leadership team and community. Youth Development Director must demonstrate positive, professional role modeling at all times, acting in a manner that is consistent with the Y’s core values, philosophy, goals and objectives.
Qualifications
• Ability to relate compassionately to a community of diverse individuals of all races, genders and income levels.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent.
• Five or more years of professional experience in a related field required, including three or more years in a leadership or supervisory role – preferably with YMCA.
• Experience with camping, conference/retreat, and/or environmental education programs strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with the YMCA movement, both nationally and internationally, strongly preferred.
• Strong working knowledge of Department of Health New York State camp guidelines and policies.
• Trained in Child Abuse Prevention and Reporting.
• Experience developing programs and implementing through supervision of volunteers and staff
• Development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations, and fundraising.
• Proven track record of developing authentic and deepened relationships with others.
• Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
• YMCA Team Leader certification preferred.
• CPR, First Aid and AED certifications required.
Essential Functions
Manage and Support Staff
• Oversees the recruitment and management of diverse staff and volunteers:
o Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains staff in accordance with established policies. Plans, assigns, and directs work.
o Sets expectations, reviews, rewards and effectively manages staff; addresses any staff or camp family complaints or concerns and resolves problems through cause-driven leadership application.
o Ensures that all staff maintain training requirements.
• Ensures that all camps, camp programming and camp events are staffed in accordance with licensing requirements.
• Manage a team of Camp Directors to achieve goals and revenue growth of program.
Ensure the Physical, Emotional and Social Safety of Program participants
• Work with Camp Directors and staff to create an environment in which all program participants are respectful of each other and the guidelines.
• Set guidelines for staff so that they are able to spend time with the program participants and are able to observe the group dynamics of each group and connect with individual program participants.
• Operate in accordance to Mandated Reporter policies while keeping CEO/AED appraised.
• Use parents as resources to give insight into their child’s behavior and how to help them
• Stay informed of staff choices, especially involving discipline, to ensure that program participants receive fair and appropriate treatment
• Handle all situations involving program participants’ safety in a timely manner
Relationship Management & Outreach
• Manages relationships with key partners, constituents, community members, program participants, and clients.
• Ensure a process exists for regular communication with parents about their child’s behavior, successes and challenges
• Keep parents informed of any changes regarding program or schedule
• Keep the CEO/President/AED informed of any parent concerns or situations that need further attention
• Encourage and coach camp Leaders to engage with parents and other community representatives to foster good neighboring and build awareness.
• Engage with community, area schools and other programs to introduce the Y and camp programs and events.
• Represent and/or staff outreach events to bring awareness, including but not limited to:
School events, Camp Fairs, Community Events, YMCA Events, etc.
• Markets programs and monitors registrations to track participation, grows program according to annual budget targets.
• Committed to the growth of all programs and identifying new opportunities; goals will be set by leadership with support to achieve
Leadership Team Responsibilities
• Work to establish and maintain positive relationships with all Leadership Team members
• Communicate regularly with CEO/President/AED
• Serves as an active member of the leadership team, ensuring that departments operate cross-functionally
• Participates in YMCA sponsored events as requested
• The focal point of the organization for Child Abuse Prevention Policies and Training and resource to staff.
Camp Operations
• Work with Facility Director and Camp Director to have camp operating safely; including camp opening and closing processes.
• Ensures compliance with all state and local regulations.
• Identifies facility and program improvements to help the function of camp or to grow participation.
• Works with Camp Directors to create and implement curriculum, activities and field trips.
• Directly responsible for maintaining and renewing all licensing requirements and ensuring compliance, including American Camp Association, ACA, and accreditation requirements.
• Coordinates transportation between for camp families and/or camp related field trips.
School Camp Site
• Coordinates usage of school for safe operation of summer camp programming with District Superintendent or school principal
• Ensures compliance with specific school district or school requirements to operate camp program
• Ensures compliance with all state and local regulations.
• Directly responsible for maintaining and renewing all licensing requirements and ensuring compliance.
Additional Administrative Functions
• Provides proactive reporting to leadership of both fiscal and programmatic data
• Manage accreditation compliance including tracking and reporting where applicable.
• Responsible for operating department within set budget guidelines and meeting or exceeding revenue goals.
• Monitors registration, billing and collections for all programs
• Directly responsible for processing of department’s payroll in a timely and accurate manner
• Participates in grant initiatives for camp and other youth activities
