Position Summary

The Youth Development Manager is an administrative and supervisory support position to the Youth Development Director. The Youth Development Manager must have the proven ability and desire to work with children, parents, volunteers, and peers. The Youth Development Manager will supervise youth development coordinators, youth development leads, and youth development leaders, oversee youth development program areas, and lead activities for youth program events as needed. The Youth Development Manager must have experience supervising youth programs, and will be expected to lead by example, facilitate positive behavior management, facilitate coaching and training of staff, be able to create a positive and welcoming environment for all, and have strong communication and relationship building skills.

Essential Functions   

To know, explain and exemplify the mission, purpose, and values of the Kroc Center and the Salvation Army. Instruct, train, & coach Youth Development Coordinators, Youth Development Leads, & Youth Development staff to lead youth activities with enthusiasm according to training protocol. Communicate respectfully with peers, supervisors, and customers of various socio-economic backgrounds. Handle disputes with participants, parents, and staff in a professional manner with guidance from the Youth Development Director. Act as a first point of contact in handling customer service issues. Oversee point of sale operations, cash handling, and recreation management database for all Day Camp, Playcare, and Enrichment programs. Assist the Youth Development Director with planning and instruction of the annual Day Camp Staff Training Seminar, monthly Playcare training, and quarterly enrichment training. Responsible for the supervision of Youth Development Coordinator, Youth Development Leads, Youth Development Leaders, and Junior Leader positions. Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures and the Youth Development Code of Conduct & staff manuals. Assist the Youth Development Director with screening, interviewing, hiring, and training of all youth development staff. Assis the Youth Development Director with staff scheduling, timekeeping in UKG Ultipro software, and conflict management with staff. Assist the Youth Development Director with inclusion and behavior challenge intakes, parent meetings, and follow up. Assist the Youth Development Director with program budgets for Day Camp, Playcare, and Enrichment programs. Must be in good physical health and mental health, capable of meeting the demands of the program. Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis. Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. Work with the Youth Development Director to plan, design, and implement new programs within the youth development departments. Perform other assignments/duties as directed.

Working Conditions

Ability to walk, swim, skate, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis.  Ability to be able to lift up-to 50lbs. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinets drawers and reach overhead.  Ability to operate computer and telephone.

Minimum Qualifications    

Minimum High School graduate or equivalent; college degree preferred. Current CPR/First Aid certifications required on first day of work Minimum 21 years of age Minimum two years of experience working with children plus an additional two years of supervisory/management experience, preferably in Day Camp or childcare environment. Must maintain a valid California Driver’s License Must successfully complete Decision Driving Safety Test before driving for The Salvation Army and annually recertify as required Must meet certification by and participate in The Salvation Army’s Fleet Safety Program (Salvation Army Fleet Safety Policy dictates that an employee may not obtain more than two [2] moving violations or accidents within any 12-month period; see The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Policy)

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Bilingual Spanish preferred. Must work well and relate well with people Must plan, lead, & attend staff, child safety, and other training as directed Program Budgeting knowledge and experience preferred. Strong conflict resolution skills & behavior management skills Must have a philosophy of education and child development consistent with that of The Salvation Army Kroc Center Must be capable of learning basic point -of-scale procedures Must be able to work well with children, parents, and staff in a capacity of leadership, counseling, and education including but not limited to Ability to relate joyfully and sensitively to children of all ages Ability to use appropriate positive discipline consistently Ability to handle security and crisis situations calmly Ability to provide constant and continual supervision Ability to engage and maintain a child’s interest in activities Previous experience with point-of-sale or computerized sales systems Requires use of Microsoft Word and Excel Microsoft PowerPoint helpful Working knowledge of integrated database applications and ability to use software programs with basic training
