Investigates properties to ensure that land use is in compliance with zoning regulations. Gathers data, conducts research, and enters permit information into the system. Provides information and assistance as requested. Essential Functions + Responsible for field inspection and enforcement of specific land uses and business activities, such as short-term rentals, nightclubs, and establishments with late hours. + Enforces zoning ordinances by conducting field investigations in response to complaints, surveying the area for additional violations, reviewing permit requests for zoning requirements, reviewing construction, repair and renovation plans for compliance, and issuing violation notices. + Provides assistance to the general public by receiving zoning violation complaints, forwarding information to enforcement officers for investigation, and explaining regulations and proper compliance procedures. + Performs administrative duties by maintaining a computer tracking system including maps, addresses, permits, zoning maps, and other related information, conducting research, and issuing zoning certificates. + Provides direction and guidance to staff by assisting them with difficult court cases, interpreting ordinances, reviewing their work, preparing reports, making recommendations, and implementing changes. + Performs related duties by preparing cases and compiling data for the prosecution of violations to city code. Education/Experience + Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency. Required: + One year experience in investigations or appraisals. + One or more years of experience interpreting zoning ordinances, conducting field investigations reviewing construction, repair and renovation plans, and issuing violation notices preferred. Additional Information & Requirements + Valid Driver's License. + Special Police Commission within 60 days of employment. + ICC Zoning Inspector certification or equivalent within 18 months of employment. If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction. + The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education.
